EAP Basics

EAP is not psychotherapy. Understand these basics first.
What is EAP Counseling?
  1. EAP is for short-term assessment, referral and problem resolution only.

  2. Some clients may not have mental health issues. They may seek help finding resource information. You may need to research resource info. for someone outside of sessions. We can help -- contact us in these cases.

  3. You never ask a client for any payment information while providing EAP counseling.

Number of Sessions
  1. If client would best benefit from longer-term outpatient psychotherapy (more than 5 sessions)? Refer the client in the first session or two!

  2. You may refer an EAP client to your own psychotherapy practice, if:

    1. You have extensive training in evidence-based treatment of presenting disorder of client.

    2. You provide the EAP client with at least one other option of an appropriately skilled counselor in private practice.

    3. You explain that the cost of subsequent sessions are not be covered by EAP but are paid for by his/her insurance and/or out-of-pocket.

  3. If a client chooses not to accept a referral for longer -term treatment, you may continue to see them for up to 5 sessions, but must set a meaningful mutually agreed upon goal for what can realistically be resolved within five sessions.
